...art’s political and moral effects are convincing only when driven by deep, in many ways selfish, psychological needs.

—This is not a time for subversion. It is a time for affirmative action; as social life implodes, as solidarity is under threat, art and culture feel compelled to take on a role in the social sphere as community work: participatory art, process-based art, etc. The risk is that most of these projects will remain purely aesthetic, and appear as nothing more than amateur social work. Or worse: a lubricant for neoliberal development. Intervention into politics is the only real option. Temporary and fleeting subversive artistic interventions will not change the world or save the planet.
